Paul Newman Gives Up Acting to Concentrate on Salads

Paul Newman, 82, said on Friday that he would not make more films because he was too old.

“I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level that I would want to,” Newman said. “You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that’s pretty much a closed book for me,” he said, referring to his screen acting career. I’m grateful for the other things that have come into my life.”

Well all told, being a voice actor on Cars was probably not the best way to finish a great career but the reality is that Paul Newman hadn’t exactly been choosing quality projects for a while now. Aside from Road to Perdition a few years back, it was one mediocre project after another and considering how rarely he actually worked, Paul Newman had defacto retired a while back. This is simply the official statement of it.

Newman has had a great career but he’s mainly remembered for the movies he did decades ago. Most of the major actors of his generation are either dead or moved on to doing something else. It’s a closing chapter and there’s at least some likelihood that it’s motivated by health problems that have been unstated. Either way good luck to him. Retirement isn’t pretty but he’s got salads and politics to fill his time.
