Open Gaming Platform for Consoles?

Just one open platform would likely remove a lot of the headaches that now plague both gamers and developers, said Gerhard Florin, Electronics Arts senior executive in charge of international publishing.

“We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible,” Florin said during the interview. “We’re platform agnostic and we definitely don’t want to have one platform which is a walled garden.”

Where are they even getting five from, unless they’re counting some of the portables and maybe the PS2. It’s funny that Electronic Arts is so hyped up about an open gaming platform, when they’re the ones who sabotaged their PS3 games after their cozy relationship with Microsoft.

I’m sure EA would love an open gaming platform but then why bother creating consoles in the first place? With an open gaming platform, console makers would find themselves in the position of IBM. After all once the games meet an open platform standard, China can just churn out 500 clones for a fraction of the price of a PS3 or XBox 360 and while the performance may be worse, the price war won’t be won by the brand consoles, it’ll be won by the clones. The consoles will essentially become just higher brand dedicated PC’s, which they nearly are already.

You can see why Microsoft and Sony which have pumped billions into proprietary technologies to maintain that monopoly would not be thrilled with said prospect.
