Judd Apatow Sucks

A lot of people are declaring Judd Apatow to be the best thing to happen to comedy since Jim Carrey started talking out of his own butt. A lot of these same people were declaring that Eli Roth was the best thing to happen to horror since Wes Craven’s career rebooted and then sank again. The sad reality though is that Eli Roth and Judd Apatow have a lot in common.

Judd Apatow and Eli Roth are both great at working the system and promoting themselves and their projects. They’ve staked out their territories and gotten publicity by pushing the boundaries for shock value. And neither of them has a clue about the material they’re working with. Eli Roth had no clue about horror. Horror is not about chopping people to bits, it’s about terrifying people with the idea that they might be chopped to bits. Eli Roth jettisoned the horror and suspense in favor of feeding torture porn by strapping people to tables and cutting them up.

Judd Apatow has no clue about comedy. Judd Apatow often gets credit for Freaks and Geeks, but take a look at the Office and then at Undeclared and it’s easy enough to see who should get the credit for Freaks and Geeks, him or Paul Feig. Undeclared was lamer than a stoned sheep and it demonstrated what everyone knows by now, Judd Apatow isn’t funny. Judd Apatow can only do comedy when he’s doing R Rated and above. His only real bomb was of course Unaccompanied Minors when he couldn’t push the R/PG-13 boundaries. But that’s because Judd Apatow isn’t funny. He just tacks on enough bodily fluids, body parts and ‘things you supposedly can’t say in theaters but really can say’ jokes to his movies and gets laughs. It’s perfect that Judd Apatow co-wrote an Adam Sandler movie, because neither one of them is funny and both share the same non-sense of humor.

Judd Apatow’s are basically remakes of cliched 80’s and 90’s movies. Take 40 Year Old Virgin, it mixes together a dozen 80’s movies and makes them much raunchier. Superbad is half a dozen high school movies remixed with more stuff about cocks. Zoltan was done over and over in the 80’s, except we called it things like Perfect Strangers or Crocodile Dundee. Walk Hard is the same “Throw Anything at the Wall” genre of movie parody that Abrams and Zucker ruled. Forgetting Sarah Marshall… come on you’ve seen this movie 500 times already, but the trailer has a blowjob joke and that is typical Judd Apatow. You want to make a Judd Apatow movie, take the lamest 80’s movie you can think of and add the sort of jokes that a college sophomore today would laugh at. Make sure you push the language and grossness boundaries as far as you can. Cast somebody from Freaks and Geeks in the lead. Give Jonah Hill a supporting part. There’s your Judd Apatow movie.
