First Transformers, Then Comes Thundercats

I unknowingly speculated only a few days ago when writing about the He Man live action film that if they were making Transformers, sooner or later they would make Thundercats and gosh, now they are.

Studio has optioned a script by tyro scribe Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a CGI-animated feature. Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats. Studio’s recently been bitten by the nostalgia bug, pacting with Joel Silver to produce a live-action “He-Man” movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comicbook “Teen Titans,” a junior Justice League.

Wouldn’t it maybe make some more sense to actually wait and see if Transformers is a great idea or a terrible idea or at least a terrible idea that makes some money? The rush to dig up and remake, to endlessly mine properties and regurgitate them for a new generation is a sign of financial insecurity and creative bankruptcy.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when the studios keep churning out remakes of mediocre 80’s cartoons, instead of producing anything new. Sequels and remakes and live action adaptations of cartoons now? After Transformers, can we go any lower?

Seems like we can.
