Space Ramblings

Back to the Battlestar Galactica Well

After Caprica failed miserably, the people who ruined Battlestar Galactica are going back to the spaceships mode with Blood and Chrome. Who in the world wants to watch a prequel about a war that’s doomed to be lost and wipe out the human race. Or the young version of a miserable drunk whose poor decision making and temper tantrums doom the human race to savagery. Not me. But the people who keep praising Battlestar Galactica will probably show up. Caprica is doomed. But a BSG with spaceships and shooting will actually draw enough of an audience to keep this train going. Sadly enough. I was no fan of the original Battlestar Galactica, but the reboot was idiotic, and got more idiotic as it went along.

“The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said SyFy’s Mark Stern.

No it’s not. It’s the opposite of being rich with possibilities. In the Galactica universe, everyone tampers with technology and pays the price for it. Over and over again. In the Galactica universe everyone dies. And nothing makes sense.

It’s not like BSG ended on some great high note and Caprica is dying. Personally I would go for another reboot that is much more upbeat (ie actually has likable characters), gets rid of the corniness of the first BSG, and is actually a sci-fi series. It well written and produced, it would destroy what Moore did. Of course the fanboys would hate it. But considering that BSG is already streaming on NetFlix, I don’t think they hold too much economic sway.

That was what BSG was supposed to be. Except it went off into pretentiousland and way off the pier.

Maybe Singer can finally get on that reboot, TV or film.
