Dr. Phil Denies Free Will

And the Dr. Phil marathon rolls on for another record breaking third post. Give it up for the Dr. Phil marathon folks.

Speaking on Larry King Live, Dr Phil said, “We are programming these people as a society. Common sense tells you that if these kids are playing video games, where they’re on a mass killing spree in a video game, it’s glamorized on the big screen, it’s become part of the fibre of our society. You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath or someone suffering from mental illness and add in a dose of rage, the suggestibility is too high.

Good point fake TV shrink talking to a dried up old gasbag on CNN. But here’s my little query Doc. When you grew up watching cowboys shoot up people and played cowboy with your little friends, didn’t that also program you to go on killing sprees? What about all those glamorized cowboy movies. Do the names Clint Eastwood and Sam Peckinpah mean anything to you?

Yet somehow that wasn’t programming your generation to go off murdering everyone in sigh, right Doc? And what about all those cop shows and cop movies and soldier movies? Those didn’t program you to violence. For some reason watching a WWII movie had no effect on your fragile chubby psyche but playing a WWII soldier in Call of Duty turns you into a raging sociopath.

“And we’re going to have to start dealing with that. We’re going to have to start addressing those issues and recognizing that the mass murders of tomorrow are the children of today that are being programmed with this massive violence overdose.”

Your children are the mass murderers of the future, teach them well and let them show the way.

Gosh Dr. Phil all mass murderers are children at one point, but isn’t it just possible that people, including children, have free will, that they’re not programmed automatons but people with feelings and desires, both good and bad, and that what they do with the movies and books they read depends on them, rather than on the books and movies?

How many serial killers have had a fixation on J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. Was Salinger programming the murderer of John Lennon or was that just another case of a whackjob deciding to kill someone because he had more than a few screws. And how exactly does that seem any different than the Virginia Tech killings.

Finally O Fake TV Doc, riddle me this. Did the Virginia Tech killer even play video games?
